BARYTE

Sidi Lahcen, Nador, Nador Province, Oriental Region, Morocco
SPECIMEN DESCRIPTION

This gorgeous blue Baryte is labelled as from Sidi Lahcen, but evidence shows that all of the specimens attributed to there came from the nearby Jebel Ouichane in north-eastern Morocco, source of some of the world's finest blue Baryte crystals. This area was known for fine blue Baryte in the 1970s but was forgotten until about 2012, when large quantities of specimens appeared on the market. This amazing large cabinet specimen displays the rosetted, to cockscomb form, as clustered glossy, pale blue aggregates to about 2.5 cm across, contrasting nicely with colourless to white Calcite background. The base of the specimen is ironstone which provides it with a firm foundation, preventing damage to the surrounding fine Baryte crystals. The display surface is wonderfully attractive and in stunning condition. Ex Nick Hawes collection.
