SMITHSONITE epimorphous after CALCITE

SPECIMEN DESCRIPTION

Intergrown lenticular crystals of Calcite are coated by light yellow-tan Smithsonite from Sardinia (probably from Iglesias, Carbonia-Iglesias Province). In a couple of places where the tips of the Smithsonite crystals are broken away, the original Calcite crystals measuring to 2.4 cm show some dissolution, well on the way to leaving the overlain Smithsonite as an epimorphic form. A really engaging Smithsonite specimen from Sardinia and at small cabinet in size it displays really nicely.
